The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) has recently introduced a groundbreaking application named SEPTA Transit Watch, providing passengers with a secure platform to report suspicious activities on public transport to the police via text messages. SEPTA Transit Watch allows travelers to send information about suspicious activities both while on board vehicles and at stations. According to SEPTA officials, passengers also have the option to send pictures anonymously. Sgt. Michael Wright, a traffic police officer, noted that many people hesitate to make phone calls unnecessarily due to fear of getting involved in troubles but are more willing to send a text message. Through this free app, users can communicate with dispatchers who may seek further details about the reported incident.

Moreover, SEPTA Transit Watch enables the authority to send alerts and notifications to those who have downloaded the app. Neil McDevitt, Executive Director of the Deaf-Hearing Communication Center, praised the app for making it easier for people with hearing impairments to communicate with the police. He said, "For deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, this app provides emergency services that truly address previous gaps in reporting."

For passengers without smartphones, they can send information to SEPTA via the number 215-234-1911. Sgt. Wright emphasized that information received through these apps is unlikely to be used as evidence for prosecution but serves as a tip-off. The app, built by Elerts, cost $254,000 over three years and is part of SEPTA's technological upgrade, which includes introducing new fare cards, SEPTA Key, and adding more accurate real-time information to its apps.

Currently, SEPTA Transit Watch operates independently of SEPTA's main app. However, Jeff Knueppel, SEPTA's General Manager, hinted that this will not be the case forever. He revealed that the functionality of Transit Watch will eventually be integrated into SEPTA's app. This move underscores SEPTA's commitment to leveraging technology to improve the public transit experience.
